Carving a New Path: Women in Binga Lead the Way in Carpentry

Carving in New Path: Women in Binga Lead the Way in Capentry

In the heart of Binga, ActionAid Zimbabwe's (AAZ) innovative initiatives are sparking a quiet revolution. Through targeted training programs in carpentry, women in Tyunga-Luunga Ward 1 and Kalungwizi Ward 23 are challenging patriarchal norms, finding economic empowerment and confidence. AAZ's training has equipped these women with new skills, enabling them to craft base beds, wardrobes, coffins, and coffee tables.

Angela Ngwenya, one of the rights holders from Tyunga-Luunga, shared her inspiring story.

I was thinking that carpentry can only be done by men, but after the trainings i came to understand that women can also do better than man to repair doors and making wardrobes as well.

It is now clear and vivid that Luunga community is no longer buying coffins from Gokwe and Binga center but now the coffins are being made locally by women and youths.

In Kalungwizi Ward 23, AAZ-trained women, led by Catherine Sijali, are successfully making and selling base beds for $100 each. This group's success demonstrates the potential of AAZ's women-led initiatives in driving economic development. By providing skills training and support, AAZ is empowering women to break down barriers and thrive in non-traditional industries.
